This data set describes a series of room fire tests using upholstered furniture items for comparison with their free burning behavior, previously determined in a furniture calorimeter. Furniture is most often a hazard, not when burned in the open, but rather inside a room. Room fire data lack generality and often cannot be extrapolated to. Upholstered furniture such as chairs, recliners, love seats and sofas are common fuel packages in the living room or family room of a residential occupancy. A single upholstered chair is likely to provide sufficient energy and heat release rate to take a M x M (10′ x 12′) room to flashover.

Measurement Science for Innovative Fire Protection The goal of BFRL’s Fire Research Division is to reduce the impact of fire on communities, structures, building occupants, emergency responders, and the economy by providing the measurement science needed to reduce preventable fire losses. The second series of tests involved the use of 22 sets of used upholstered furniture. In these tests, 27 full-scale room fire tests were conducted on at least 1 item in each set of furniture. The results of the second series of fire tests were used to assess the predictive capability of the three upholstered furniture burning rate models.

4.) Develop a bench-scale composite or component method that would serve as an accurate screen for the full-scale test.
